2010: A year to remember for Social Media

The year of 2010 can be characterized, indeed, as the year of Social Media! We had experienced tremendous growth and their penetration to the users of Internet was more than impressive.

Some people would say that it could be a precursor to everything that we will experience not only through 2011 but also during the following years.

The most significant moments of social media in 2010 were the following:

  • Facebook is the largest online Social Network and continues to grow. From around 350 million users one year ago, Facebook looks like is going to reach 1 billion before too long. On March Facebook surpasses Google in weekly hits and Mark Zuckerberg becomes TIME's Person of Year.
  • The famous micro blogging platform, Twitter, gets 200 million users. Keep in mind that in November 2009, there were 27 million tweets a day and than number reached 95 million in December 2010.
  • Linkedin has 85 million profiles. Primarily for business to business (B2B) networking, Linkedin added new features and kept the social networking at a very high level.
  • YouTube, one of the most visited website in the world, had more than 2 billion videos watched per day.
  • The geolocation Social Network, Foursquare, gets 4 million users and Facebook launches Places, a similar service.
  • Blogs: From 129 million on 2009 to about 152 million on 2010.
  • Flickr has more than 40 million users
  • Stumbleupon surpassed 10 million users in 2010
  • In 2010, Slideshare grew their traffic to 45 million users per month.
